JT is the double purpose ot a lamp » to nelp you see and to be good ; to look at. A pleated chintz shade j on a pottery or glass base adds that touch ot simplicity that we are all • striving tor to-day. . ] wire frame, 12 inches across, and about 8 inches high, white enamel and a brush, i yard each of chintz and white muslin, 14 yard of white crinoline, i yard of plain glazed chintz, 14 yard ol fine silk cord. Should the shade be another size, you need 3 inches more V than 6 times the distance across the snade in length and 2 inches more than the height in width. pAINT the wires ol the irame tor the color of the lining. Cut 3 pieces ol chintz 10 by 25 inches, taking the width, of the material for the length; join the short ends to make a long strip. Do likewise with the muslin. Fold the crinoline in half, crosswise, and cut on the fold. Of each piece cut three pieces 10 by 25 inches. Join the short ends. Lay these strips on ♦op of each other seam to seam. Lay the crinoline strips between the muslin and the chintz, seams matching. Baste these together, making the body of the shade. QF the plain chintz cut 2-inch and 1-inch strips, each 75 laches long. Fold under the raw
edges, and told the strips in hall lengthwise, creasing the fold. Bind the long edges ot the body of the shade with these strips, the wider being at the bottom. Have the piece pleated in i-inch accordeon pleats; U inch from the top edge pass the cord through, first making the holes for it with a needle such as Is used for punch work, and then an embroidery stiletto- Place the pleated piece on the frame, the cord coming a little below the top wire; tie this. Arrange the pleats, and sew the short ends together. Tack each pleat to the top wire, and tack occasionally along the bottom fibre. The pleated piece extends about 1 inch beyond bote the top and bottom wires.
