SEGRAVE’S CAR
Golden Arrow Cost £15,000 SWIFTEST YET (Unitect P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (United Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The “Daily Mail” publishes further details of Major H. O. D. Segrave's new record-seeking car, named the “Golden Arrow.” It says that IS months ago a millionaire visited Major Segrave and said: “I hear you want to get back the record. Go ahead. Get the car built, and tell the designer to spend what he likes. Spare no money in making the car as safe as is humanly possible.” Major Segrave commissioned a motor engineer, Captain Irving, a North Countryman, and Captain Irving carried out his commission. The car cost £15,000. It is estimated tlftat the car will cover 150 miles during the trial racing, including run-ups and slow-downs equivalent to one work. Probably it will not be wanted after that. Its cost works out at £-250 a minute. Practically every component part is of the best English steel, even the small nuts being specially vurned. The car is designed for a maximum of 2SO miles an hour, but a fixed gear ratios limit the speed to 240. The cockpit armour is plated. When Major Segrave is strapped in, even if the car overturns, which is considered unlikely owing to its low centre of. gravity, the plating will take the shock.
