ADVANCING BLAZE EATS UP PASTURES. HOMES AND SCHOOLS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Bush fives are now devastating the southern districts o£ the State. A great fire at Whipstick destroyed seven houses and a wattle-bark treatment plant valued at £30,000. The schodlhouse was the only building in the village that survived the | flames. Several farms at Lochiel were re- j duced to ruins. At Numbagga, the j schoolhouse, teacher’s, residence, and | post office were destroyed. The oecu-i pants were forced to flee lor their j lives. Thousands of acres of grass and j many miles of fencing were demo!- ( ished, and much stock perished. In some centres, the fire-fighters have been working ceaselessly for two j days and nights endeavouring to check the fires. Flames in parts of the ruined areas reached 100 ft high. Extensive fires also occurred in the suburbs of Sydney. Welcome relief yesterday from the great heat was brought about by a cool breeze from the sea. The highest reading of the thermometer to-day was 81 degrees.
