Red Fuchsia Is In Good Fettle

fOR GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES INTERESTING WORK AT AWAPUNI (Special to THE SUNJ PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Although Foxton, Trentham and Ashhurst meetings are looming near, the majority of horses who will be lacing at those fixtures have had the benefit of the holiday racing and matters were most uninteresting yesterday morning. A line morning found the tracks in excellent order, and what few gallops were undertaken were carried out on the plough, which carried a heavy bed of fine- dirt on the surface. Blimp, Teremoana and Vaucluse, three candidates from G. New’s stable, were sent along over seven furlongs on the plough, the distance being left behind in 1.39. While Blimp finished full of running, the track conditions on the day will no doubt decide whether the Gasbag

gelding will be a runner in the Foxton Gup. as he favours the sting out of the ground. The Foxton course, with its heavy composition of sand, might prove to his liking, although it has proved very tricky on eiVrlier occasions and not every horse can handle Teremoana has been nominated for the Awahou Hack Handicap at Foxton, while Vaucluse may be found at Ashhurst on the first day, prior to going through to Trentham for the second day. Teremoana has been a disappointment on more than one occasion, although he shows promise in his track work. Vaucluse has not had a great deal of racing, but he is moulding into Shape. Foxton Cup Try-out • Imperial Spark had Mister Gamp as st companion in a mile gallop on the plough, the Foxton Cup candidate drawing away in the straight to complete the distance in 1.45. the Bronzetti gelding being several lengths back. Mister Gamp is carrying a robust appearance and he will be given an outing in the Awahou Handicap at Foxton. in which he will be ridden by T. Green. Atareria (from L. Knapp’s stable) and Locarno were sent a round over four fences and, following an indifferent jump to begin with, Atareria improved as he went and was going the better at the finish. Locarno, on the other hand, jumped cleanly till the final fence, where he rapped the top batten. Atareria, while a moody sort, may improve on his second to Lady Gay at Marton when he contests the Pouroatowhao Hurdles at Foxton. Locarno will in all probability make his debut in public as a fencer at Ashhurst. and, on present indications, should prove a worthy member of Miss Maher’s team. Hurdling Recruit Red Fuchsia acted at tutor to Cold Air and Lin Arlington over a round «>f the batons. The pace was on throughout, and the trio acquitted themselves well. Although he dropped back a bit,in the run home Lin Arlington made quite a promising showing, this having been the Acre gelding’s first essay In company. Mr. S„ R. Hammond, of Hunterville, is a lover of the jumper, and he has hud those good ones, Puwhero and Ardath to carry his colours in the past. In Cold Air he may also have a useful performer when he has had greater experience. Red Fuchsia carries a burly appearance and is thriving on his tasks. It had not been intended to bring him in so soon, but his actions in the pad-d«x-k necessitated it. The Great North- . era Hurdles is a long time off, and by i

then the All Red gelding should be ready to make a bold bid for the honours. In addition to Clarinda, Blimp and Imperial Spark, Awapuni stables supplied a further quartette to the nominations for the Foxton Cup, but Kalos is the only other one at all likely to reach the post, although the future of Kilmiss will no doubt be determined by track conditions. Novar is not to make the trip, while Wilderness will be a runner in the Herrington Handicap in preference. The Signor gelding has benefited by his outings at Marton and he should offer some more formidable opposition at Foxton, particularly if the going is good. Promising Maiden Kilorell, from J. Kelly’s stable, has likewise benefited by his Marton outing, having sobered down considerably. After being slow to move in bis race at Marton the Kilbroney gelding was travelling fast over the concluding stages, and, while he may not prove to be a sprinter, he should develop into a middle distance performer in time. Jiu Jazz, who also figured in the Awahou Handicap, has been sent home owing to having injured a foot. The mishap came at a most unfortunate time, for W. Bailey was steadily bringing the half-sister to Ring Boy into racing shape. Moutoa Treasury has been one of the unlucky horses on the local tracks this season, for, just on the eve of the past Wellington meeting she was compelled to forego her engagements. When going well just prior to Christmas she presumably ricked herself at the jump-out in a morning gallop, in which she ran clean away from her companion. Although the Paper Money filly is back again in the active ranks, she is being restricted to j trotting exercise on the grass and whether she will go through with her Ashhurst engagement is difficult to determine. Keddar ran good races at Marton, the Arrowsmith gelding running second to Miss Pat over six furlongs on the opening day and then filling fourth berth behind Sir Roy, Mendip and Ruanui on the second day. Keddar’s next public appearance will, all going well, be made in the Anniversary Handicap, run over a mile, at Trentham. Although restricted to pace work lon the plough yesterday morning Keddar was putting plenty of dash into his work. Both Unbeaten To Date Lucky Bag and Grand Acre, both of whom have scored wins in their two starts, are going along well in their work. Both have been nominated for Ashhurst as well as Trentham, but no doubt they will make the trip to the major fixture, all going well. A very useful pair, further* successes should come their way. J. Blanche, who broke his left collarbone when Vexatious fell with him on the opening day of the Manawatu meeting, is making good progress toVward recovery, while A. E. Stratton, who sustained bruises when Atareria fell at the last fence on the first day at Marton, is now practically himself and will no doubt have the mount on the Rossendale gelding at Foxton. District foalings announced are as follow:—Bay colt to Marsuma, by Lackham. Marsuma is the dam of Partaga, and, like the elder member of her progeny, is owned in Tarandki; colt foal by Lackham from one of the few Gold Reef mares about; Mr. McDonald, of Levin, who owns the youngster, has also a yearling from the same mare by Royal Divorce; colt foal by Lackham from Loyal Maid, who proved herself to be a useful sort in her day; filly foal by Lackham from Sea Foam; for several years past Sea Foam, who was herself no mean performer, failed to produce. A Demonstration The action of the judge at the Albion Park, Brisbane, meeting on Saturday week in placing Rowladdie first in the Park Purse was responsible for one of the worst demonstrations seen on a registered course in Brisbane for a long time. To occupants of the public stand both Craftdancer and Eramk appeared to beat Rowladdie and immediately Rowladdie’s number was hoisted there was a rush to the official enclosure. Then followed a chorus of “800-hoos,” which continued for some time. Metcalf’s Progress Sportsmen will regret to learn that T. Metcalf, who sustained serious injuries at the Feilding meeting when Briar Root fell, suffered a relapse recently which necessitated his return to bed for a week. In addition to fracturing his left arm, right , little finger, and a bone in his foot, Metcalf sustained concussion and apparently the heat of one day brought about a renewai of the dizziness in the head. He is, however, about again, and is receiving massage treatment to the injured members, but some time will perforce elapse ere he is able to return to the saddle. &
