The weather was fine, but a strong northerly made conditions unpleasant on various playing areas, and big totals were recorded in several matches. Play commenced at 9 a.m., 130 rinks and 520 players being engaged on 11 greens. There were a number of surprise defeats, and already Benefield, winner of the 1927 championship, is among those losing both games. Foster, the winner last year at Christchurch, is not playing in the present series in which two rounds are being played of 25 heads, instead of three of 21 heads, as m former years. The third and fourth rounds are being played on Thursday, the fifth and sixth on Friday, and the seventh and eighth on Saturday. Maxwell Walker won both his games. He accounted for Maher (St. Leonards), 29 —15, and received a game by default. Higgott (Whitiora) beat Norwood (Victoria), 28—24, and then gave Nash (Palmerston North) a beating, 26—17. Hosking (Carlton) had two wins, receiving a default from Gaydon (Queensland), and he won from Watson (United), 28 —18. Pilkington also had two wins, one over Ferkins (Island Bay), 32—20, and another after a great go with Fairway (Wellington), by a point, 29 —28. Norrie Bell (Hamilton) was not beaten in the first two rounds. He beat Gartrell (New South Wales), 30—24, and Roach (Shannon), 32 —26, both big scoring games. Findlay (Mount Eden), at the Wellington green, won against McWhannell (Hataitai), 23 —21, and won the second round against Smith (Newtown). 24—19. Bremner (West End) had two victories, Duncan (Wellington), 26 —23, and Gray (Keiburn), 31—17.

Rainbridge (Mount Eden”) defeated | Rringans (Khandallab), 23 —17. but . the second round to Pollock (N» w- , town), 25 —28. Parsons (Ponscnby), • 19, beat King (New South W v aJes), T 7; i then Sewell (St. John's), beat the Ponsonby man. 22—19. Ryan (Remuer») I lost the first round to Ballinger (Kop* burn), and then defeated the wellknown skip. W. Feilding (HataitaiVy 22—11. Feilding, by the way, lost both his games. A SOUND JUDGE Judge Thomson (New South \Vale3.) was responsible for the downfall at (lordon (Carlton), 2S—7; rather a big defeat for the Carlton team. In the next round, they lost again, this time to Franks Masterton), IS—23. Arro- ] strong (Pukekohe), 29. beat SI inn (.Hutt), 19, but the Pukekohe skip last i the second game to Wardropp (Woodville). 35—24. a big total. NORTH BEATEN IN RINKS North <.Te Awamutu), the singles ; "two-lifer,” was defeated in his rink ! Same to-day by Beynon (Petonc), j 26—34. but then beat Duncan (Well--1 ington), 24—13. Clark (Mount Albert), 23. lost to Dowry (Kelburn), 26, but then had the satisfaction of beating: the redoubtable St. John’s rink, led by Benefield. 29 —20. Nash (Palmerston) won against Griffin (New South j Wales), 23 —21; and then he lost to Higgott (Whitiora), 17 —26. QUEENSLANDERS WITHDRAW All the members of the Queensland, teams have defaulted, and will not ba again seen in action. They find they cannot the time to see the tourney through, and resolved to get out before the rinks commenced. They have been very popular, and general r.egreat was expressed. The brilliancy of the singles games in the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds at Wellington Lower green on Tuesday, is still the main topic of discussion.. Some of the finest displays of drawing ever seen in Wellington were given. Parsons (Ponsonby) was uncanny in his precision, and obtained shots that left the onlookers gasping. The Ponsonby crack had a margin of 17 points over Allatt (New South Wales) and 13 points over Watsgu (Tirau). The display given in the ninth gurpe between Clarke (West End) and Parsons was really splendid, Clarke going to a one-point difference on the 2Lsfc head, 17—16. SMART IN FORM Alan Smart is also in magnificent trim, and his play of exceedingly high, standard. He downed the South Canterbury crack. Edwards (Temuka), 10 the tune of 19—9. and then defeated Bremner by 20 points. It was a rema*"kable performance on such a keen green as Wellington was on Tuesdav. The wise ones are quietly tipping Smart for the 1928 singles, but his hard work is yet before him. Parsons, Coltmaa and do Launay are still there. The sterling performance of Pollock (Newtown) in settling Maxwell Walker and Pilkington in one afternoon has been a notable feature so far. Pollock is playing really well. The weather seems unsettled, but ft is hoped it will remain fine for the continuation of rink play to-day. Wellington is fortunate in having such a, great gathering of bowlers, and a big day is being arranged for next Sunday at Trentham Racecourse. To-day’s play was remarkable for big scobiiig, due mainly to the high wind prevailing.
