TERRITORY TO BE CEDED ITALY AND THE VATICAN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Wednesday. The Rome correspondent of the British United Press Association says the Italian Government proposes to cede to the Pope a piece of territory on which there are between 10,000 and 15,000 inhabitants over whom his Holiness has nominal sovereignty. The draft of the agreement is now on the Pope’s desk. In spite of a succession of rumours and denials, some people Interpret the Vatican’s tributes to the late Marquis Domenico Barone as an Indication that the agelong quarrel between the Vatican and the Italian Government is either ending or ended (said a Rome message earlier this week). The Marquis Barone, who died last week, participated in the delicate negotiations with the Vatican on behalf of the Government. His death is believed to have been accelerated by anxiety and by over-strain. The Vatican admits that the diplomatic qualities of the Marquis and his mastery of jurisprudence were instrumental. in reaching a stage of agreement sought vainly by previous negotiators. It further alludes to a solution “virtually reached,” thanks to the efforts of the Marquis Barone and the Vatican representative. Signor Francesco Pacelli, 'consist.orial attorney.
