Chief-Detective R. Ward, of Wellington, is paying a visit to Auckland. Mr. S. I. Crookes left for Wellington last evening by the Limited express. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. T. AT. Wilford. has returned to Wellington after visiting Auckland and Rotorua. Mr. J. A. Lee, the late Labour mem- I ber for Auckland East, has been appointed manager of the Palace Hotel, ! Rotorua. Captain W. Whitefield, of t.he Union Steam Ship Company, arrived from Wellington this morning by the Limited Mr. Paul Sykes, assistant Canadian Trade Commissioner, and Airs. Sykes returned to Auckland this morning on the Tamaroa from Wellington. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, M.L.C., arrived in Auckland this morning from the South and is staying with Dr. Kenneth Mackenzie. Princes Street. Sir Dudley de Chair, Governor of New South Wales, who is staying at Takapuna, paid an unofficial visit yesterday to the Devon port Naval Base, where he was the guest of Commodore G. T*. C. P. Swabey. Mr. B. Wheeler, assistant traffic manager. Union Steam Ship Company, Wellington, arrived in Auckland this morping by the Tamaroa. Hg is accompanied by Mrs. Wheeler and is on his way to Sydney. The Rev. W. A. Sinclair, general secretary of the Methodist Alissionary Society of New Zealand, returned to Auckland this morning by the Limited express after paying a visit to the British Solomon Islands, the mandated territory of New Guinea and Papua. Arrangements have been made for a public presentation to Mr. J. G. Eliott, ex-M.P. for Oroua, at Peilding on February 5. The Leader of the Opposition (the Rt. Hon. J. G.
