WOMAN’S RECORD CLIMB
MOUNT COOK SCALED VISITOR FROM OVERSEAS Press Association TIMARU, {Tuesday. A notable feat in mountain climbing was accomplished last Sunday by Miss K. Gardiner, of Liverpool, England, when she climbed Mount Cook, 12,347 ft, in 155 hours, record time for a woman climber. Accompanied by Guide Vic Williams and a porter, Lud Mahan, Miss Gardiner left the Haast Hut at 2 a.m. on Sunday in excellent weather for climbing. £}y 9.15 a.m. Summit Rock was reached, and the party halted for breakfast. Up to this stage the going had been fairly hard, the ice-glazed rocks being very difficult to surmount. Crampons were donned and the party reached the summit at 10.15 a.m., after an arduous climb. The ice cap on the summit was found to be fairly difficult, owing to fresh snow having fallen on tho hard ice. An exceptionally fine view was obtained from the top. both coasts being clearly visible. Miss Gardiner has climbed in Switzerland and Canada, and expresses the opinion that New Zealand guides can hold their own with the guides in those countries. Mount Cook has been climbed over 30 times, eight times by women.
