FLAT DENIAL GIVEN
NO SPACE FOR SHIPMENTS, SAY LUMBERMEN UNION COMPANY CRITICISED ('Australian and N.Z Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, To-day. Claiming that they had never been a.ble to get any space for lumber shipments of any size on Unio* Company vessels to New Zealand and Australia, and that that company had taken little interest in the lumber trade to Australia and New Zealand, the Associated Timber Exporters of British Columbia met and flatly denied the statements of .Mr. J. C. Irons, Vancouver manager of the company, that space was available. All the leading exporters, with one exception, attended and unanimously asserted that the company, operating fo.r 30 years, had specialised in passengers, mail and general cargo, had consistently treated lumber as a stepchild, and had declined to handle lumber at all during certain months, claiming that no space was available. Lumber shipments by the company's vessels during the last two years had been only five per cent, of the cargoes. Under these circumstances the lumbermen claim that they are forced to petition the Government to subsidise a new freight service to Australia direct, as the company’s ships first call at New Zealand.
