RELIEF WORKS FULL
OVER 150 MEN WORKING FOUR RESERVES BEING IMPROVED Between 150 and 160 men. are now engaged on relief works at 12s and 9s a day in the city. In spite of the unemployment situation having been serious for a matter of two years, little, if anything, has been done toward effecting any permanent improvement, with the result that at the moment there are more men on relief work than there have been at any other period. The position is serious. All the contributed funds have been exhausted; the city is working on another £IO,OOO unemployed relief loan, and using a carefully horded reserve fund of £B,OOO for Waiatarua Park improvements, and some people are already wondering what is going to be the position next winter. At present some 60 men are engaged at Waiatarua or Lake St. John reserve on a road round the lake, and at the Western Springs sports arena. The recreation ground at Point Chevalier is being extended, and 22 men are engaged here, while a party of about 18 is engaged on the portion
of Grey Lynn Park adjoining Williamson Avenue. The city is awaiting advice as to whether the Government intends to fully subsidise the £IO,OOO loan and £ S.OOO Wa.iata.rna fund pound for pound.
