SOLID CANTERBURY
HARD FIGHT FOR RUNS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Canterbury had an uphill task in the second day’s play of the match against Wellington. On Monday Wellington put on 433 for the loss of eight wickets, and in view of the soft wicket to-day consequent on the previous day’s rain Lowry declared. The wicket was soft when Canterbury started on its big task at 11 o’clock, and it got more difficult as time wore on. Under the circumstances Canterbury put up a performance by batting all day for 306 runs at a cost of eight wickets. The match has to be finished to-morrow, and as Wellington will have to bat again a draw seems inevitable. Page and Newman again proved the backbone of the Canterbury batting, both playing sound, solid cricket. Several other batsmen got useful double figures, and Merritt seems to be building up a butting reputation although his bowling has gone off.
