COLOURLESS CRICKET

AUCKLAND BEATEN BY WAIKATO

TWO WICKETS WIN

Waikato’s win by two wickets over a cricket team representing Auckland was colourless. The game ended at Eden Park yesterday afternoon, but, taken generally, it was a tame affair. The Aucklanders did not exert them-, selves any more in their second innings play than in their opening effort on New Year’s Day. Even the veteran, S. G. Smith, who scored 58, was almost careless on occasions. He was badly beaten by the bowlers for three overs before he was dismissed. Auckland knocked up lt>3 in the second innings, 10 runs fewer than the opening tally. Waikato, with 192 already on the board, had only 145 runs to make for a win. The visitors took a long time getting them. The first few batsmen did well, Hemus scoring 48, Hawke 37, and Skeet 21, but the remainder proved to be uncertain. With only- three runs to make for a win, Waikato lost two batsmen. Nearly twenty minutes were taken in making the three runs. It was at this stage that the Auckland bowlers, Smith and Goodwin, puzzled the batsmen most. Duncan was a brilliant fieldsman for Auckland and brought off two line catches. i The game was merely holiday cricket of average standard. The Aucklanders took things rather casually, and had only themselves to blame for losing. In their second innings they did not try very strenuously to pile up runs. Assisting Smith. Goodwin made a useful 19, and Lyon gained a similar score more hurriedly. Going was in fine form for Waikato as a bowler, and five wickets fell to him at a cost of 33 runs. Details:
