FLAX RETURNS
DECREASE IN GRADINGS Flax graded at Auckland last month was considerably smaller in quantity’ than that graded during the same period last year. The output was also lower than in November. Most of the mills are now closed until after the New Year holidays, and business is quiet. Although the returns for this year are smaller than those in 1927, the higher grades are coming forward in larger quantities. The average grading is much higher, particularly in regard to hemp. In the returns listed as follow for the month of December, last year’s figures are given in parentheses: fair, 192 bales (29); high fair, 590 (390); low ffair. 540 (1,107); common, 304 (471); rejected, 44 (16). Total, 1,670 bales (2,013). Tow.—No. 1, 87 bales ( —); No. 2, 334 (355); No. 3. 91 (281); condemned, 32 (23). Total: 544 (659). Stripper Slips.—No. 2. (24); No. 3. 5 (1); condemned, 5 ( —).
