MAORI SPORTSMAN’S DEATH
NEPHEW OF WAR CHIEFTAIN (Special to THE SUN) TAURANGA, Monday. A well-known member of the Ngaiterangi tribe, Rawiri Puhirakei, died at Ngaitukairangi, Matapihi, last evening. In his younger days Pukirakei was a noted Rugby footballer, playing in the Tauranga representative team for many years. He was a keen yatchsman and competed at local regattas. He was a nephew of the famous war chieftain, Rawiri Puhirakei, after whom he was named. His wife died about three years ago and there is no family. The customary tangi now being held is being attended by natives from all surrounding districts.
