OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID

POSITION AT WAIKERIA EVIDENCE AT INQUEST (Special to THE SUN) HAMILTON, To-day. At the inquest into the death of Alfred Leo Lewis, aged 21, an inmate of the Waikeria Borstal Institute, who died in the Waikato Hospital on December 30 from typhoid fever, it was stated that there was no similarity between his case and that of another inmate who died at the hospital a few days before.

There were four other Waikeria inmates at the Waikato Hospital suffering definitely from typhoid, while an inmate who had suffered previously from typhoid and was suspected of being a carrier, had been brought into the hospital for observation that day. The district medical officer of health had visited Waikeria and was making inquiries into the cause of the outbreak.
