GIRL CITIZENS
Y.W.C.A. CONFERENCE
MANY DELEGATES PRESENT
The annual conference of the New Zealand Girl Citizen Movement of the Y.W.C.A. opened on Thursday afternoon at Nga Tawa College in Marton. About seventy delegates from most of the associations in the Dominion gathered in the hall for the first assembly. Miss Ethel Law, general secretary for the Y.W.CA. of New Zealand, presided over the meeting, and with her was Mrs. Ernest Dawson, of Wellington, chairman of the National Girl Citizen Committee, who is acting as conference hostess. Miss Law read telegrams of greeting from the national president, from friends in Tiinaru, Auckland, and other places, and a letter from the national chief counsellor. Miss Leila Bridgman, who is unable to attend the conference, but whose greetings were received enthusiastically by the Citizens.
The leaders of the four interested groups were then introduced and spoke briefly of the attractions of their coming programmes. The conference is fortunate in having as guests Miss Eileen Russell, instructor in eurythmics in Wellington; Miss Clodagh Russell, teacher of choric speaking, literature and drama; Miss Olive Jones, from the Dunedin Y.W.C.A., who is teaching poster work and linocuts; and Mr. Douglas Tayler, F.R.C.0., director of school music for New Zealand.
In the evening a friendship fire was lighted with appropriate ceremonial, and Miss Law spoke to the girls about the conference theme, “The City Beautiful.”
