PROSPEROUS SPAIN
DOCTOR IMPRESSED
ENGLAND’S WONDERFUL SUMMER
Spain was a revelation to Dr. C. F. Morkane, of Christchurch, who returned last evening from a tour of England, the Continent of Europe, and America.
He found there the finest automatic telephone service in Europe, and could ring London from Madrid in three minutes.
The reading activity was amazing. Many of the streets were being widened, and a wide concrete motor road ran almost through the country. When he left, preparations were in hand to electrify 1,800 miles of railway line. Dr. Morkane said that he was surprised at the prosperity of Spain, particularly in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Madrid. Two big exhibitions have been planned for next year, and every effort is being made to improve trade. Dr. Morkane has been visiting hospitals and institutions connected with his profession throughout England. Europe and America. During his stay in England he attended a medical conference at Cardiff. He visited the hospitals in Vienna and also in Stockholm, which is now the great centre for the radium treatment of cancer. Vienna, he says, is still in a desperate plight. She has not recovered from the aftermath of the war, and the people do not seem to know what will happen next. England looked wonderfully well, and it was only when he visited the coal-mining areas that he saw any signs of depression. The summer was marvellous, and the doctor motored for days through England in the most glorious weather. While in England, Dr. Morkane had the pleasure of dining with Mr. T. P. O’Connor, the famous journalist and politician who, lie says, is still a remarkable man, despite his 80 years.
