THE REV. W, J. ELLIOTT

(PRESIDENT OF THE METHODIST CHURCH OF NEW* ZEALAND) rpHE Babe of Bethlehem made a Christmas in our world and brought such joy as it had never known before. His advent was the opening of the treasures of Divine Love, and the revelation of an Eternal Father. “He became poor” when He took on Him the form of a servant, and by so doing He lifted us to His throne of eternal wealth. He lived our life and died our death to give us more abundant life. This is indicated by the Incarnation. Thus the heart welcomes Christmas and all its joyful tidings. We think of it and speak of it as a happy time. But it is not a time when we are at liberty to run into any “excess of riot.” True Christmas joy must be joy in Christ, and there is nothing but eternal fitness in connecting all reasonable festivity with His name. His presence can never dim and sadden any pure and wholesome joy. Let us be merry in Christ and in the meaning of a Saviour Who is Christ the Lord.
