“ABSOLUTE UPROAR”
BRAWL IN HOTEL TWO MEN CHARGED “An absolute uproar” was how Sergeant Angland described a brawl in an hotel bar to which he was attracted on Saturday evening. A S a result o£ the sergeant’s interxv vention, George Riley, a Samoan Seaman, aged 26, and John Howard, also a seaman, aged 28, were charged at the Police Court this morning with fighting, the former admitting his offence, and the latter pleading not guilty. William Oscar Smith and other witnesses thought that Riley was the aggressor, and that the other man was merely defending himself. His face was covered in blood. Sub-Inspector McCarthy remembered that Riley had admitted at the police station that he was mainly responsible. “It is obvious that Howard took part in the fight,” commented Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., “but as the witnesses seem agreed that he did not start the uproar, the case against him is dismissed.” Riley was fined £2.
