CAROL CONCERT
BAND AND SINGERS A carol concert provided by the Municipal Band and the Minster Singers attracted a large attendance at the Town Hall on Saturday evening. The programme provided was indeed seasonable, embodying as it did many old favourites with which the Christmas season is associated. Although the Singers comprised only eight voices, with a suitable band accompaniment, very satisfactory volume was attained. The excellent work of the band in this connection was indeed a feature of the concert. “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “While Shepherds 'Vyatch’d Their Flocks” were sung with telling effect. Also of a high standard was the work of the Singers in “An Evening Pastorale” and “In England, Merrie England.” Items by the band were “Poet and Peasant” (Suppe), Miserere Scene from “II Trovatore” (Verdi), “Yeomen of the Guard” (Sullivan), “William Tell” overture (Rossini) and Schubert's “Impromptu” (Op. 142, No. 2). All were warmly received. Further items were a xylophone solo, “Bisley,” Mr. Roland Jackson: song. “The Holy Child,” Miss Ruby Moselen: cornet solo, “A Shepherd's Morning Song” (Suppe), Mr. Fred Bowes; song. “The Jester” (Lissenden), Mr. Roy Stephenson: and flute solo, “The Elves” (Wetzger), Mr. H. C. McLennan. The Minster Singers were: Soprani Misses Gladys Hosking and May Ross. contraltos, Misses Maida Davidson and Ruby Moselen; tenors, Messrs. A. L. McPherson and Frank Kidgway. basses, Messrs. Roy Stephenson and K. J. Dellow. The band was conducted by Mr. C. Smith, and Mr. Walter Impett was accompanist.
