BOGUS MASKED ROBBERY
VICTIM CHARGED WITH THEFT SUB-POSTMASTER IN COURT There has been a sequel to the alleged raid by masked men on the sub-post office in Bethnal Green Road, London, the police having arrested the supposed victim of the outrage. Later the man, George William Veasy, 65, the sub-postmaster, was charged at Old Street with stealing £551 12s 9d belonging to the Post-master-General. Mr. H. E. Gallaher, from the solicitors department of the General Post Office, prosecuting, stated that Veasy, on September 24, was found lying on the floor of his office. He told a story of having been attacked by masked robbers and drugged, and the contents of the safe stolen. The police made inquiries, and Veasy, after a caution, admitted that his story was false and that he had planned a bogus robbery to cover up his thefts from the post office. It was a serious case, and he, Mr Gallaher, might have to ask for a committal. Sergeant Halliday gave evidence that he went to the post office and told Veasy his story of the alleged robbery was not believed, and that he would be arrested. Veasy replied “I have been very worried over business matters lately. This is the end There was no robbery. I should like to tell you the whole truth.” He was Informed that he could make a statement at the police station, and was taken to Bethnal Green Station where he did so. This statement the officer did not propose to put in at this stage. Veasy was remanded.
