“FREIGHT BY RAIL”
NEW RAILWAY BOOKLET A bright and informative little booklet entitled “Freight by Rail” has been issued by the Railway Department for the convenience and information of railway users. This publication, which is in accordance with the department’s scheme for greater publicity regarding the workings of the railways, performs a useful service. In addition to time-tables, information in regard to freight charges and similar subjects is included in its profusely illustrated pages. “Recent years have witnessed a remarkable expansion in our goods traffic,” states the general manager, Mr. H. H. Sterling, in a foreword. “The tonnage shows an increase from 5,373,136 tons iq 1918 to 7,366,762 in 1928. “In view of this, and the additional lines into new territory recently taken over by the working railways, coupled with the steady improvement now being effected in rolling-stock, equipment, signalling practice, shunting facilities and train-operating methods and results, I feel the time has come for a better diffusion of knowledge regarding the general capacity of the railways to assure for the Dominion an effective freight service.”
