BAN ON SPIRIT COMPASS
AMERICA’S DRY LAWS AIRMAN’S DIFFICULTIES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) NEW YORK, Thursday. Mrs. Lancaster, the wife of the airman, Captain W. N. Lancaster, who arrived at New York to-day to undertake a tour of the United States by air, carried with her a special aviation compass, which was used by her husband on his flight from England to Australia, and which he intends to use here. The compass, however, was filled with' four ounces of pure alcohol, and the customs officials insisted that it must be drained off, otherwise 'it would involve a violation of the prohibition law.
Captain Lancaster, after appealing to many officials and stating that the draining off of the spirit would completely upset the calibration of the compass, was finally permitted to carry it away intact.
