Joseph Livingstone, aged 60, was sentenced to six years’ gaol for the manslaughter of Margaret Fearon, his sister-in-law, on October 31. Mr. Justice Mann described the crime as revolting and without the slightest provocation. A case of murder and attempted suicide occurred on October 31 at Frankston, a Victorian seaside resort, about 20 miles from Melbourne. The dead body of Margaret Fearon, aged 66, who had been acting as housekeeper to her brother-in-law, Joseph Livingstone, was found in her home. There were severe wounds in her neck.
The body was lying face downward in the back-yard. Livingstone, who is an estate agent, was found in a front room with his throat cut, but able to speak. The man told the police he had intended to commit suicide, but changed his mind. He was arrested and charged with the murder of the woman.
