NEW WATER SUPPLY
PAPATOETOE REQUIRES £26,000 I RATEPAYERS’ POLL TO-DAY To-day a poll of ratepayers will be held to decide on a proposal to | raise £26,000 for the purpose of 1 undertaking a comprehensive water supply scheme for Papatoetoe. | The original scheme would have cost ' £40,000, but the work was reduced on * the recommendation of the Local Gov- • ernment Loan Board. The amount put j before the ratepayers to-day will enj sure an adequate water supply to every J house in the district. If the loan of j £ 26.000 is approved the board will inl stal a chlorination plant, pumps, and , a rising main to a reservoir to be built on McLaughlin’s Hill. The cost will also provide a pipe-line to the township. as well as reticulation throughout the surrounding area. The water will be secured from a well on Mr. AV. McLaughlin’s estate j at Puliinui. about two miles from the township, and has been tested to yield about 1,000.000 gallons a week. Analysis shows it to be of excellent quality. The board lias agreed to an annual rental of £2O for the site of the shaft, rising by i_’lo a year every 10 years, to j a maximum of £ 50 a year. The total annual charges on a loan '.of £26,000 would be £1,850, which, on I the district’s rateable value of j £356,107, would require a special rate !of 1.26 din the £. The annual cost on j a property of the unimproved value of ! £2OO would be £2 11s, including £1 1 Is for the special water rate and £1 ! 10s as a water charge. ! Voting will take place between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to-day at the Public i Hall, Papatoetoe, and the Manukau County Council office in Auckland.
