24s For a Turkey

Thousands of Birds Offering in Markets EAGER CHRISTMAS BUYERS Twenty-four shillings for a turkey. It is a big price, but buyers have been paying that sum j for the best birds at the City Markets this week. Christmas lias had its effect on the poultry auctions. One lirrn made a \ record clearance of nearly 4,000 birds at one auction recently. ! Turkeys are more numerous than j t \ or, but the quality, according: to the I frank admission of auctioneers, is only ! lair. People are buying them eagerly, imbued with pleasurable hopes for I Christmas. Fowls, ducks, and geese are on the | markets, too. in huge numbers. Aucklanders buy many thousands in a week. Fowls and ducks are easily in the majority. By the end of this week, most people will have laid in their Christmas stocks, but sales are being held every day to cope with the great demand. The strange thing about the turkey sales especially is that people ignore the fact that the birds are far from their best condition for eating during Christmas. A bird killed during June, July or August, the usual breeding months for turkeys, would make much better eating than Christmas turkeys. But some people would think that Christmas would be incomplete with- | out a turkey gracing the table.
