SANDERS CUP CREWS

RESTRICTION OF AGE SUGGESTION BY AUCKLAND There is a growing dissatisfaction in Auckland with the present regulations governing the Sanders Cup contest. A proposal cam© before the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association last evening that the age of crews be in future restricted to 21 years. The Royal , New Zealand Yacht Squadron advised that unless the Sanders Cup contests were in future restricted to youths under 21, subscriptions would be discontinued. As it was the squadron reduced this year’s contribution to £lO, as against £2O last year. The proposed amendment to tne present unrestricted age would be a. very vital change, said the chairman, Mr. O. A. Moiler, and must be given earnest consideration. Clubs should bo given time to talk over the suggestion. _ _ . Mr. Charles Palmer remarked that nothing had been done year after year. Yachtsmen seemed afraid to make any definite move. Mr. W. Kirkh ai% on behalf of the Ponsonby Cruising Club, said the club had not supported the contest financially for three years on principle. It was in favour of the age limit of 21. Mr: A. J. Collings pointed out that under the contest regulations all remits must be forwarded before December 31. He moved and Mr. R. B. Wilson seconded, that the association send a tentative suggestion that the age of crews be restricted to 21. Clubs could in the meantime give the proposal adequate discussion, and if the weight of opinion was found to be against the remit it could be revoked by the association at its January meeting.

An amendment by Mr. W. A. Wilkinson, representing the Tamaki Yacht Club, that no remit be forwarded until clubs had voiced opinions, lapsed for want of a seconder. The motion was carried by nine to one. As a help toward financing the contest, to be held at Akaroa on February 14, it was agreed that all members of the chosen crew over 21 be asked to contribute £5 each. The first of a series of trial races to select Auckland’s boat crew will be held to-morrow evening. The boats chosen are Val, Rona and Avalon. The race will start off Prince’s Wharf at 5 p.m. The course will be decided shortly before, the start.
