MR. A. DOUGLAS RETIRES PRESENTATIONS AT MT. EDEN Parents* day at Mount Eden School yesterdwy was a more important event than usual because of the retirement on superannuation of Mr. A. Douglas, the headmaster. In 40 years’ service, Mr. Douglas has aught in many parts of New Zealand. For the last two years he has been at Mbunt Eden, his previous charge being the Nelson Central School. Mr. S. E. Chappell, chairman of the School Committee, presented the dux medal to Catherine McNab and certificates of merit to the ten best pupils in each class. The school, he said, had benefited greatly by the headmastership of Mr. Douglas, and the committee wished to express its regrbt at the retirement. Three presentations were made to Mr. Douglas, a golf bag from the staff, Mr. W. I’. Hannken handing it to him: a set of golf clubs and a pair of bronze ■ rnaments from the pupils, and a fountain pen from the? School Committee. Replying, Mr. Douglas, thanked the staff und the committee for their cooperation. He had enjoyed his term of office at the school, and had found the children "particularly fine people to work with.” Mr. Douglas mentioned :iie success of the no homework scheme, which had enabled the children to come to school with clearer minds md a greater desire and ability to study. Three cheers were given for the retiring headmaster. After the presentation the swimming sports were held in the Mount Eden baths.
