PLANK SWIMS WELL

TWO WINS AT MOUNT EDEN CARNIVAL MISS MAGEE’S 100 YARDS D. Plank, the newest star of the Mount Eden Swimming Club, secured a brace of notable wins at the club’s opening carnival at the Bellevue Road baths last evening. First, he headed R. de Loree home in > the final of the 50 yards club championship, after a decisive win in his heat. Later, he accounted for De Loree once again in the 220yds open handicap, in which ex-champion Viv Cunnold, of Waitemata, also raced. Plank’s times were good and he was not extended. His successes capped off his showings in training and in the Grammar Club’s carnival last week. Five close heats were raced in the 66 2-3yds inter-club handicap, and the winners were W. Japeth, R. de Loree, S. Brooking, J. Enwright and R. Sellars. In the final, Sellars swam determinedly and brought off a good win for his club, Helensville. Miss Doris Magee, of Parnell, was not greatly troubled in winning the women’s 100 yards handicap in fair time. She is getting into form. Misses Dorothy Grant (Grammar), Edna Champion (Mount Eden) and Peggy Robertson (Parnell) were next. Miss Magee’s performance, off scratch, was encouraging. The attendance at the carnival was fair. All the events interested and the showings of Plank, Sellars and Miss Magee were certainly the features of the evening. Several junior events, a schools’ championship race, a breast-stroke handicap and a neat header, were other attractions. Devonport defaulted to Parnell in a water polo game, so Parnell played a scratch team. Play was far from brilliant. Among the officials were: Judges, Messrs. G. L. Taylor, IT. Hale, C. F. Johns; referee, W. S. Adams; handicapper and starter, H. Moore; timekeepers, J. K. Douglas, H. Morton, E. Maude, A. McKenzie.
