MUSSOLINI’S LATEST
UNIFORM TEXT-BOOKS VATICAN ORGAN’S COMMENT Times Cable. Reed. 9.5 a.m. ROME, Monday. The Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, has planned to have uniform text books in all schools in Italy. The Vatican organ, “Osservatore Romano,” says the teachers will be allowed a certain latitude before this Fascist revolution, provided that their teaching has not conflicted with the interest of the State in temporal matters or of the Church in spiritual matters. The heresies of freedom of conscience, of speech, and of the Press, came in, says the paper, with Liberalism. The Fascist regime rudely shook them, but the existing text books continue to teach them. Also, many of the teachers are still infected with doctrines that are contrary to religious faith and Christian morals and the security of the State. The “Osservatore Romano” calls attention to the continued teaching of the freedom of the conscience and of speech, and especially to the antiPapal bias of certain history books. Nevertheless the newspaper says it fears that uniformity in books will prevent the parents of the children from indulging in special preferences in education.
