Motor Races at Muriwai

Big Meeting Planned For February 23 A big motor racing meeting will be held on Muriwai Beach on SatI urday. February 23 next, according to plans announced by the Muriwai Motor Racing Club, Ltd. When the A.A.A. announced its decision to abandon beach racing, the Muriwai Motor Racing Club was formed by several prominent people in the Auckland motor world, and the members have been devoting a considerable amount of time to the arrangements for their first meeting. The following programme has been adopted: 1— Touring Car Handicap—Distance of four miles with one turn. Standard equipment and gearing. Starting at 11.30 a.m. Nomination fee, 10s; acceptance, ss. Post entries £l. First and second prizes. 2 Qualification Sweepstake—Twelve miles with eight turns. All competitors in events 4,7, 9 and 10 must start in this event. Seven entries or no prize. Sweepstake of 10s from each driver, also first and second prizes. 3 Motor-Cycle Race—Open to any • class. Nine miles. Nomination ss, ac- ' ceptance 2s 6d. First, second and third prizes of trophy value. 4 N.Z. Beach Championship—Dis- - tance of 24 miles with 16 turns. Nomination fee, £3 3s. 5 Baby Austin Championship—Dis- : tance four miles, with one turn. Nomination fee, 10s; acceptance, ss. For . standard machines. Prize by Seabrook Fowlds and Co. 6 Ladies' Handicap—Two miles I straight. Standard equipment and ‘ gearing. Nomination fee, ss. Post entries, 10s. 7 Australasian Beach Championship—Distance, 21 miles, with 14 turns. ! Nomination fee, £2 2s. Post enI tries. 10— Farewell Handicap—Distance, nine miles, with six turns. Nomina- ’ tion fee, £l. In all races all turnings must be made to the right and the rule of the road must be observed. In races No. 4 to 10 inclusive, first, second and third prizes are offered. ALWAYS IN VIEW It is planned to stage the races over a shox't course (roughly 1« miles each ( way) at the near end of the beach, with the grandstand in the middle of the route. This will enable the spectators to have the cars always in view and ensures a brighter afternoon’s , sport. MOTOR-CYCLE RACES The inclusion of two motor-cycle « events on the programme should make for variety. These races are for any 1 make or size of machine, although they will be handicapped by Mr. J. Kay, liandicapper for the Auckland Motor Racing Club. Possibly Mr. Cl. Campbell will be the handicapped for the car events. AUSTRALIANS TO COMPETE A team of motor racing enthusiasts is coming over from Australia for this meeting, including Messrs. East, Russell-Taylor, O’Rourke and. Parle, all of whom have raced here before. a large number of local men I aro preparing their racing cars for ! this meeting. Speed champions who | have appeared at Muriwai before and will probably reappear in February are Messrs. D. F. Bauch op, Wills ana C. W. F. Hamilton. Mr. Wills will probably drive Mr. Hamilton’s Sunbeam, as Mr. Hamilton intends to buy . another racer. Mr. A. J. Koycroft will appear with a Bugatti, and altogether record entries are expected. CAMPING AT MURIWAI The Muriwai Motor Racing Club is making special arrangements for the convenience of motorists who wish to spend the week-end camping on or near Muriwai Beach, as well as adequate parking arrangements for the day of the races.
