“SOVIET DECAY” CAUSED
LATEST RUSSIAN ILLNESS TOO MUCH ENTHUSIASM LONDON, December 5. “Soviet Decay”'is the name Dr. N. A. Semashko, People’s Commissar of Health, applies to a widespread ailment. This, lie says, is decimating the ranks of the Communists, especially the “Old Guard.” says the Riga correspondent of “The Times.” ’ The chief symptoms are nervous exhaustion, sleeplessness, general debility, and premature arterio-sclerosis. Several deaths among the “Old Guard” from this ailment have occurred recently. Every hard-working party man suffers more or less. Dr. Semashko blames nervous excitement and excessive, enthusiasm. He calls on somebody to discover a prophylactic which will prevent the disease, but not diminish the patient’s enthusiasm. “Comrades who possess the gift of the tongue are appallingly ignorant about hygiene,” he concludes, “and thus many unnecessary tears are shed over the graves of victims of Soviet decay.”
