GREAT JEWEL HOARD
A SULTAN’S TREASURE PART SOLD FOR £5,000,000 (United Service) LONDON, Wednesday. Tlio Constantinople correspondent of the “Daily News” says a syndicate of London capitalists has entered into a bargain with the Turkish Government to purchase the ex-Sultan’s jewels, except those of historic interest. The price mentioned is £5,000,000. The jewels form a wonderful collection, the accumulation of centuries. They were once valued at £ 360,000,000, which is generally regarded as an exaggerated estimate. The most valuable items are the Throne of the Shah Ismail, of Persia, the jewelled dagger of Mahomet the Conqueror, and the jewelled sworcl of Constantine, Emperor of Byzantium. The Turkish Government, in 1927, commissioned a Swiss jeweller to value the collection. He said the task was impossible. In an underground vault he found tray upon tray piled with mixed loose stones of an unbelievable size. It was recently rumoured that Kemal Pasha, the Turkish President, intended to sell the jewels to improve the Turkish finances. A Paris firm then valued a portion at £20,000,000.
