HAPPENINGS AT HOTEL
TAITA GORGE FATALITY EVIDENCE AT INQUEST Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. At the inquest on J. O’Neill, killed in the Taita Gorge accident, the coroner in reply to counsel’s objection against the witness Horsfall, answering questions relating to happenings at Quinn’s Post Hotel, held that the Court was to judge. He did not think Section 16 of the Evidence Act covered prosecutions under the Licensing Act. The driver might plead privilege, as the answers might involve him in a more serious charge than a breach of the Licensing Act. Hofcgfall said they were asked to leave Quinn’s Post Hotel by the man who served them and also that they bought four large bottles of beer from the proprietress. Prior to the accident in the gorge, he said, there was a collision with a telegraph post in which a bottle of whisky, also bought at Quinn’s Post Hotel, was broken in his pocket. None of this liquor, he said, was consumed prior to the accident.
