ATTEMPT ON SAFE
Amateurs at work INTRUDERS AT PAPAKURA BANK OF N.S.W. ENTERED (From Our Own Correspondent} PAPAKURA, To-day. Last night an attempt was made to break open the safe of the Bank of New South Wales at Papakura. Gunpowder had been scattered on the floor around the safe, and a charge which had been placed in the lock of the safe had failed to explode. It is thought to have been the work either of boys or of amateur safebreakers. The teller of the branch, Mr. F. Aston, lives on the premises, but last evening he went out and did not return until a late hour. The presence of the gunpowder and a blow-lamp, usually used by painters for removing old paint from buildings, aroused the teller’s suspicions when he returned, and he informed the police. A thorough search was made, and it was evident that intruders had visited the premises during the absence of Mr. Aston. Evidently the safe-breakers were disturbed, otherwise they would not have left the blow-lamp. Had the charge which was in the lock of the safe exploded it would not have done any damage. Neither could any damage have resulted from the use of gunpowder.
The Papakura branch of the Bank of New South Wales stands on the main road through the town. Entrance had been gained by breakirig a window.
