Labourer Faces Robbery Charges
VIOLENCE ALLEGED S.M. REFUSES BAIL Two charges of robbery with violence were preferred against Cyril Kevan McKenna in the Police Court this morning. McKenna, a labourer, aged 21, was charged with robbing Frederick Joseph Kneebone and Walter Easton, using personal violence in each instance. The offences were said to have been committed last evening, and it was alleged that McKenna had taken a watch and a hat valued at. £6 10s from Kneebone, and an overcoat, hat and watch, valuod at £5, from Easton. On the application of Sub-Inspector McCarthy, a remand was granted until Monday. McKenna’s application for bail was refused* Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., remarking that he would give no bail when a man faced such charges. ATTACKED ON FERRY WHARF It is stated that Mr. Kneebone was waiting on the ferry wharf about 9 o’clock last evening for the boat to Takapuna. There were only a few people about at the time. Just before the ferry sailed Mr. Kneebone was approached by a man who asked him for a cigarette. The stranger started up a conversation, and a little later was joined by a companion. Suddenly, it is said, Mr. Kneebone was struck a. violent blow on the face and knocked down. His assailants are reported to have relieved him of his watch and also to have searched his clothes. The noise of the scuffle attracted some other passengers who were hurrying to catch the ferry and the assailants made off.
