BRAVE RESCUE
Boy Thought Shark was Attacking Friend WENT IN TO SAVE HIM Thinking one of his friends was being attacked by a shark off Takapuna Beach on Saturday afternoon, Donald Foot, aged 11, swam out to his rescue. There was no shark but the boy, who was a year younger than Donald, was far out of his depth, and on the point of drowning. He had cried out just before he threw up his hands and sank, and it was his cry that attracted the attention of Donald, who was in the shallows near the sand. Donald reached the boy and caught hold of his shoulders. He began to tow him toward the beach, telling him to try and swim. The boy, however, was too exhausted to do anything and Donald had to tow him until they reached comparatively shallow water. There a w r oman, who had seen the rescue from the beach, ran out into the surf and pulled them both in. Donald is the son of Mr. E. H. Foot, of 7 Cameron Street. Takapuna. and the boy he saved is Johnnie Bomford, the son of Mrs. B. Bomford, of Hart Road, Takapuna. Donald told his father afterwards that he had seen Johnnie’s hands go up in the air and had thought he was being chased by a shark.
