FOUL PLAY IN SYDNEY
MAN FATALLY WOUNDED PEACEMAKER KILLED (United. P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 10.5 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Mystery surrounds the death of Edward Leach, aged 43, who was found lying on a heap of coke in the backyard of his home at Annandale. A doctor was called, but Leach died before his arrival. Deceased had a large wound in the forehead, and several other wounds at the back of his head. The doctor declined to give a death certificate. The police are making inquiries, and a post-mortem examination has been ordered. Another bad crime is reported. Two men fought about a betting transaction at an hotel in the suburb of Waterloo on Saturday evening. Robert Prophett, aged 36, attempted to separate the combatants, when somebody fired a revolver and shot Prophett, critically injuring him. The police arrested a young man who was seen to walk out of the hotel with a revolver in one hand. Mr. Prophett, who was formerly an alderman of Waterloo, died to-day. Thomas Garvey, aged 26. has been charged with murder.
