MOTORIST LOSES LICENCE INTOXICATED IN CAR FINE OF £SO IMPOSED “I have no sympathy with you; you have had one chance already,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., as he fined William Arthur Hawkins £SO and ordered his driver’s licence to be cancelled for three years at the Police Court this morning. Hawkins, a land agent, aged 30, pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy. the police had been informed by phone about 10.30 on Saturday night that a drunken motorist was sitting in his car in Domain Drive. “The car was found drawn up across the roadway,” continued Mr. McCarthy. “Hawkins was half asleep and it was evident that he had collided with some other car. His explanation was that he had collided with a Dr. Horton, but we rang up every Dr. Horton in the telephone directory and were unable to substantiate his story.” The sub-inspector mentioned that Hawkins had been fined .£ls and had had his licence cancelled for 12 months for a similar offence some time previously. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Either he is driving without a licence or he has managed to get round Mr. ITogan with some hard-luck story. Hawkins’s explanation was that he was waiting for a mechanic to tow him back to a gai>ge when lie went to sleep in the car. He had been involved in a collision with a motorist whom he thought to be Dr. Horton, of St. Heliers Bay. “He can sell his car to pay the fine,” said the magistrate, as he gave Hawkins a week to find the money, in default three months’ imprisonment.
