PONSONBY DEFEATS SUBURBS SMITH GETS HIS CENTURY To carry his score from 77 not out to 114 not out, and then wind up with another lino bowling performance, was the feat of the veteran. S. G. Smith, at Eden Park on Saturday, when United Suburbs went under by four points to Ponsonby on the No. 3 wicket. Suburbs in their first effort at the crease the week before had been dismissed for a meagre 57 runs, to which Ponsonby replied with 267 for six wickets (declared). The suburban men went in again, but although they did somewhat better than in the first innings, were all out for 144. Smith's partner for the most part of his long innings was F. S. Taylor, who. however, was clean bowled by Martin when he had reached 99. MARTIN’S DOUBLE A remarkable feat was that of N. Martin, the United Suburbs bowler, who secured all six Ponsonby wickets for 104 —a performance which no doubt turned the balance in his favour in the m*nds of the representative selectors. He has bowled consistently well all season, breaks both ways with an occasional “wrong ’un” which has beaten the best of batsmen.
