GRAFTON SCORES THREE POINTS
PARNELL DEFEATED By defeating Parndl on the first innings at Eden Park (No. - wicket> on Saturday, Grafton took another throe championship points. With eight wickets down for 309, the winners declared ami sent Parnell to the crease again, hoping to score a four-pointer, hut at stumps the red-caps still had twod wickets in hand. With 62 on for none, Grafton was in it fairly strong position when it resumed its first innings, but neither Horspool 30 nor Langridge 24 were fated to be at the wickets much longer. Grafton's acting-skipper was caught and bowled by McCoy for 35, and shortly afterwards the Sussex man went Ibw to Aitken for 37. Sale kept hi 9 end up for a time, but he. too, was soon buck in the pavilion. Then Allcott and Hockin became associated. The A.C.A. secretary made no bones about the bowling and stepped off the mark with a four from McCoy. A littlo later he caused come consternation in the stand by raising a six dangerously near the onlookers. in attempting to pull off another big hit, however. Hockin lost his balance, and in the fraction of a second he had Ins back foot off the ground, Turbott whipped the bails oft. Hockin s breezy, but all too short, innings yielded 10. ALLCOTT IN JOVIAL MOOD Things were looking black for Grafton at this stage when, with f our of their best wickets down, the 190 put up by Parnell was still out of reach. Allcott. however, was still in, and partnered by Walters, put up the stand that was to save the game. The tall left-hander was in his usual delightfully care-free mood, but he played a very scratchy innings. He brought off many of his typical, powerful offshots. whence came most of his runs, but few men can ever have had the • lives” Allcott had, in reaching the coveted three figures. No less than four times, comparatively easy catches went begging, while almost as many “possibles” were disregarded. On one occasion Stehr at third man had the ball sent right into his hand, but after holding it a moment, .'it dropped to the ground. Allcott was 333 not out when Horspool declared, for Hay and Duncan to open Parnell’s second knock. Their venture was without incident. Anthony 27. contributing most to the 10S for eight wickets.
