STEAMER’S S.O.S.
STRUCK WALKER ROCK LITTLE DAMAGE DONE Press Association WELLINGTON, Sunday. At 12.50 a.m. to-day S.O.S. calls were received by the Post and Telegraph Department from the steamer Par era, which was hard and fast upon Walker Rock, in the vicinity of Jac'.-ion’s Beacon, Cook Strait. The vessel stated she was making no water. There was no immediate danger and a tug was not required. At 4.43 a.m. the vessel requested assistance and the agents arranged for the Terawhiti to be despatched. At 5.28 a.m. the master reported that the vessel was afloat and proceeding to Lyttelton. The tug was not despatched. At 11.15 a.m., however, the Parera advised that if the weather did not moderate she would put into "Wellington. Anxiety for the vessel’s safety was shortlived, as the Parera arrived in 'Wellington at 5 p.m., in ship-shape order. There was no sign of damage and apparently the vessel merely grazed the rock. The S.O.S. calls were sent out as a precautionary measure. The Parera, a steel screw steamer of 555 tons, is owned by Richardson and Co., Ltd. She was built in 1921.
