BROWN’S BAY BUSES
Sir.— One or more letters complaining of the inadequate service to Brown’s Bay havo recently appeared in The Sun Presumably, these have been written by people who have had very little experience of this service or are going purely by exaggerated hearsay. The constant travellers on this service and the residents of the district are unanimous in their praise, and after the dismal failure of previous services and the experience of being at times with no means of travelling at all during the winter months, they have frequently complimented us on the travelling: facilities we provide at such reasonable cost. It must be borne in mind that the route right through to Deep (Continued in Next Column!
Creek is 15 miles, the greater part of which is over second-class roads o[ varying grades. The bus depot being 12i miles from the wharf makes the dispatch of another bus to pick up unexpected crowds impossible so, added to the fact that 80 per cent, of th« trips are with half-full buses, or in many cases empty buses, the dispatch of an extra bus on every trip could not be considered at the ruling rate of fares. Our busy season is for about two months of the year, and this necessitates a fairly large fleet to deal with the peak loads, while for the other 1® months these buses are lying idle—although the passenger insurance, heavy traffic dues, etc., are payed for a period of 12 months. As these amount to about £l5O for each bus, it means the outlay of a considerable amount for two months’ trade.
We endeavour at all times to pro vide safe and adequate travelling facilities for our patrons, and while not being always able to provide seating accommodation for every passenger, we certainly try to keep our standing loads as low as possible. LOVELL and SILICH. A. Gardner (Manager)
