AMATEUR ATHLETICS

LAST EVENING’S MEETING THE UNIVERSITY CLUB The first meeting of the University Amateur Athletic Club was staged on the Domain last evening in conjunction with two cycling events promoted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club. The 220yds handicap was a fine race from start- to finish. The crack

sprinter, A._J. Elliott, was badly placed early in the race, but favoured with a bit of luck the field spread out in the straight and he rushed through to record a brilliant victory from Henry and McLeod. Meredith, one of Auckland’s best furlong men, appeared in the beginning of the race to be a hard one to defeat, but he was crushed on to the outside, and finished well back. In the half-mile Crum had little difficulty in winning off 35yds.
