COMPLAINTS FROM CHELTENHAM DEVONPORT COUNCIL MEETS The Devonport Borough Council last evening referred to its solicitor complaints about nuisances caused by the keeping of poultry in the Cheltenham area. The medical officer of health reiterated his opinion that in this and other closelypopulated districts the keeping of poultry should be prohibited. A resident of Matai Road protested against the practice of exposing rubbish receptacles on footpaths on days when rubbish was collected, the complainant stating it was “disgusting, unsightly and insanitary.” It was suggested that if 2s 6<h*a year extra a service were charged ft would cover the additional labour cost involved in collecting rubbish from the rear of dwellings. The rubbish collecting gangs will bo Instructed to replace lids on rubbish tins and put the tin inside the front fences of sections. The committee controlling the North Shore rubbish destructor complained that wet rubbish was being received from Devonport and that too many large tins were included as well. The inspector said the complaints were not well founded. Joint representation is to be made to the Harbour Board by Devonport, Takapuna and Northcote Councils for the vesting in them of an arm of the sea near the destructor, which could be used as a dump for destructor waste. Mr. C*. Hay-Chapman, who resigned his position as wages and store clerk to take over the position of town clerk at Huntly, was voted a month’s pay as an appreciation of service during the five years spent with the council. The dinghy skids, on Queen’s Parade, will be remodelled at a cost*of £25, part of the cost to be levied on boat owners. The Melrose Tennis Club, formed to use grounds on the new park, will have temporary financial help in enclosing two courts for play. The balance sheet of the Devonport and the Rangitoto Island Domain Board was passed by the Audit Office subject to a footnote that certain expenditures from the borough funds on the domains were without authority by law. The appointment of a sinking fund commissioner to replace the late Mr. J. Muir Barr was considered. For the time being the Mayor will act as one of the commissioners. The inspector’s reports showed that building permits valued at £3,509 had been issued in November. Six cases of infectious diseases reported; 115 poultry licences issued: and 85 licences for food premises, and 10 for eating houses issued.
