ELIMINATING THE A BATTERY

A new type o£ high capacity condenser, which has been- produced as a result of research into the operation of the well-known electrolic rectifier and the electrolic condenser, is likely greatly to facilitate the problem of producing a substitute for the accumulator battery in the wireless receiver, which can be operated directly from the mains. Although there are now a number of receivers on the market which are worked entirely from the electric light mains, the problem of replacing the filament battery with a mains unit has proved a formidable one, and the equipment now used for this purpose is rather expensive. The new condenser, however, is likely to result in the production of an eliminator similar in every detail except the rectifier to the various forms of high-tension eliminators now in, use. The new condensers have a very high capacity, but at the same time they are very compact. They are being manufactured in un | s of 2,000 microfarads, 4,000 microfarads, and 6,000 microfarads capacity, These very high capacities, about 500 times greater than the capacity of the condensers in the average B battery eliminator, can be used effectively to “smooth out” the pulsating direct current supplied by the many forms of rectifiers used for charging accumulator batteries, so that their output can be applied directly to the valve filaments.
