COSTLY MYSTERY PLANE MEETS WITH DISASTER

(Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Monday. Disaster overcame an American naval “mystery” airplane to-day. The machine was destroyed in a fall of 300 ft over the naval air station at Washington. The right wing dropped off the machine when it was performing some difficult manoeuvres;. The pilot, Lieutenant James Collins, landed with the air of a. parachute.. He is suffering from shock. The Curtiss Company had worked on the plane for a year. It is said to have cost £20,000 and was considered to be one of the ye’ar’s outstanding developments in aviation.
