FIJI PINEAPPLES
SUCCESS OF INDUSTRY AUCKLAND DIRECTOR RETURNS After a visit to Fiji, Mr. Brian Hewitt, a director of the Fiji Pineapple Company, has every confidence in the success of the industry. Pineapples grown in Fiji are equal to the finest in the world, he said yesterday on the Niagara, and there Is an excellent market in Great Britain, Canada and New Zealand. The fruit for the present season was coming on slowly because of a drought which had lasted for four months. In the two weeks before he left, however, 1,500 cases had been canned. The output would increase. The Suva factory had a capacity of 15,000 tins of pineapple a day and as the industry improved the factory would be enlarged. In time to come it would probably be removed to the island of Ovalau. A large area had been planted and every season would see an increase in the acreage of fruit.
