HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES

SHOULD COVER SMALLER VEHICLES SPEED LiMiTS IN MT. EDEN A recommendation from the Traffic .inspectors* Association was received at last evening’s meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council suggesting that the heavy traffic licence system should be extended to cover commercial vehicles under two tons, which are at present exempr from the payment of fees. A circular was also-received from the engineer-in -chief of che Public Works Department asking the council to prepare a statement of the amount col iected in tees and of the uses to 'which the money had oeen put. The circular also asked for the opinion of the council as to whether greater damage was being done to the roads by heavy vehicles than by ordinary cars using the same quantity of petrol. It was decided to send i»i the traffic inspector’s recommendation, and the Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, moved that an additional reply be sent stating that the council would agree to a reduction of the heavy traffic licence fees if its share of revenue were maintained at die tame level from the petrol tax lands. Contained in the traffic inspector's report was a request that a by-law be passed to enforce the 12 miles-an-hour speed limit in Mount Eden Road between Peary Road and Boundary Road; in Balmoral Road, between Mount Eden Road and Henley Road, and in Dominion Road, between Balmoral Road and Rocklands Avenue. “We don’t want two sets of laws,” said the Mayor. “The Government has already framed Dominion regulations and I move the section be struck out.” Mr. D. C. Fraser said that' 12 miles an hour was a ridiculous limit and it was decided to take no action.
