UPLIFTING NATIVES

WORK IN AFRICA MISSIONERS’ SUCCESS The work done among the natives engaged in mining in the Transvaal by the Roodepoort Compounds Mission, was the subject of an address given by Mr. J. W. Kerr at the annual meeting of the Auckland Missionary Association held last evening. Mr. S. Barry presided. The speaker, who has spent 22 years in the work, said there were over 100 compounds, accommodating about 250,000 men who were brought down from the interior for one year’s work in the mines. Every facility was given the missionary workers by the authorities because of the wonderful effect apparent in the natives. The annual report of the Auckland Association showed that 26 interdenominational missions were affiliated with the association. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit balance of £1 7s. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. H. S. Conway; vice-presidents, Rev. A. V. Grace, Dr. W. H. Pettit, Messrs. A. Dow and S. Barry; honorary treasurer, Mr. H. R. Buscomb; secretary, Miss M. G. Nicholl; committee, Messrs. Bruce Scott, A. A. Brown, A. Mill, J. H. Manins, A. C. Marks, B. C. Hercus and Nicholl Miss Hammond and Mrs. Garroway. Mr. George Wilson, of the Ceylon General Mission, gave a short address on missionary activities in India.
